Iconic Italian restaurant chain rolling out stores across South Africa – Daily Investor

Spur has reported another strong set of half-year results, as the restaurant empire continues to go from strength to strength.

Panarottis, in particular, was a standout performer in the six-month period, growing sales by over 17% and expanding its footprint by 11 locations.

While many South Africans may know the iconic restaurant chain Spur, the company also owns many other beloved restaurants in the country, including Panarottis, John Dory’s, RocoMamas, and Doppio Zero.

Over the past few years, Spur and many of its brands have recorded strong performances, with the first half of its 2026 financial year no exception.

On Thursday, 26 February, Spur released its interim results for the six months ended 31 December 2025.

These results showed an 8.5% increase in revenue to R2.18 billion, though this was slightly outpaced by an 8.9% increase in cost of sales to R1.49 billion.

The company’s profit for the half-year was R172.58 million, up 12.4% from the first half of its 2025 financial year. Spur recorded basic earnings of 203.61 cents per share, up 13.9%.

There was a mixed performance across the company’s brands, with the Spur brand remaining the strongest performer.

Spur recorded a 7.2% increase in restaurant sales to R3.68 billion, and contributed the majority share of total sales of R6.4 billion.

Spur opened eight restaurants over the period, including three internationally and five in South Africa, bringing its network to 355 locations.

One drag on the company’s performance was John Dory’s, which continued to struggle in the first half of the financial year, with restaurant sales down 11.7% to R204.61 million.

John Dory’s saw its footprint shrink by one location over the period, down to 86 restaurants.

In contrast, Panarottis was a standout performer in the six-month period, with restaurant sales growth of 17.4% to R628.43 million.

Panarottis also expanded its footprint, with 11 restaurants opened over the period, six of which were in South Africa, bringing its network to 150.

Overall, Spur now has 753 restaurants across its brands, up from 724 in June 2025.

Spur rewarded shareholders for the company’s strong half-year performance, declaring an interim dividend of 120 cents per share, up 13.2% from the prior interim period.

The table below shows how Spur’s store base across its brands changed in the first half of its 2026 financial year.
