The African Union has condemned the recent killings and attacks in Zamfara State, expressing condolences to bereaved families and wishing the injured a swift recovery.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, strongly denounced what he described as heinous and coordinated terrorist attacks carried out on February 21, 2026, in the state.
In a statement, he said the attacks resulted in the killing of more than 50 civilians and the abduction of women and
children.
The African Union rejected all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilian populations, particularly
women and children, describing them as grave violations of human rights and serious threats to peace, security and stability.
Youssouf expressed the African Union’s solidarity with the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, conveying
heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
He reaffirmed the continental body’s support for Nigeria’s efforts to address insecurity and restore lasting
peace. The Chairperson called for the immediate, safe and unconditional release of all abducted women and children, urging strengthened and coordinated action to protect civilians and prevent a recurrence of such attacks, in line with the African Union’s commitment to peace, security and stability across the continent.
