Here’s a snapshot of the major stories making headlines this morning.

The APC and NNPP have rejected a proposed US sanctions bill targeting Rabiu Kwankwaso and Miyetti Allah groups, while multiple Lagos-linked incidents, including rape allegations and an ongoing mysterious death probe, are drawing attention.

A Federal High Court has also sentenced two Chinese directors over cybercrime, and President Bola Tinubu has nominated a new NAHCON chairman.

1. APC, NNPP Reject Proposed US Sanctions on Kwankwaso

The All Progressives Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party have criticised a US legislative proposal recommending visa bans and asset freezes against former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and two Miyetti Allah organisations over alleged religious freedom violations.

The parties argued that allegations alone should not warrant sanctions without due process and a fair hearing.

A Lagos-based content creator, popularly known as Fems Thrift, has alleged that she and a friend were raped after being lured to what was presented as a modelling engagement in the Ajao Estate area.

3. Cybercrime: Court Jails Two Chinese Directors

The Federal High Court in Lagos convicted two Chinese nationals and directors of Genting International Co. Limited, sentencing them to 46 years’ imprisonment each for cybercrime and money laundering offences.

4. Police Seal Lagos Hotel Over Mysterious Death

The Lagos State Police Command has sealed Signatious Hotel in Ajao Estate following the death of a young man, Mattias Airenekhueme, after a pool party. Investigators have taken multiple suspects into custody, while an autopsy is underway to determine the cause of death.

5. Nigerian Student’s Death in UK Raises Concerns

The death of Douglas Izevbigie, a Nigerian postgraduate student in the United Kingdom, has sparked fresh concerns among diaspora communities. Izevbigie reportedly battled aggressive leukaemia before his passing, with friends and associates launching a fundraising appeal to support funeral arrangements.

6. Tinubu Nominates New NAHCON Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has nominated Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. The appointment is subject to Senate confirmation, following the resignation of the former chairman.
