Oforikrom MP sets record straight on alleged abandonment of Afenyo-Markin by NPP MPs

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader of Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader of Parliament

The Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Michael Kwasi Aidoo, has dismissed claims that Minority MPs deliberately abandoned their leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, during a recent visit to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the allegations of abonnement are unfounded and misleading.

Speaking on a panel discussion on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday, February 9, 2026, Aidoo provided a detailed account of events surrounding the Minority Caucus’ visit to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer.

According to the Oforikrom MP, Minority Members of Parliament were informed on Sunday February 1, 2026, via their official caucus communication platform that they would be visiting Dr Bawumia on Tuesday February 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., following a caucus meeting scheduled for 8:00 a.m. at Parliament House.

‘My job is to help the party secure victory’ – Minority Leader

He explained that the visit was initiated by Afenyo-Markin himself, who chaired the caucus meeting and communicated the details, including a prescribed dress code, to all Minority MPs.

Aidoo recounted that he travelled from Kumasi to Accra in the early hours of Tuesday but was delayed by traffic and arrived at Parliament late by which time the caucus meeting had ended and MPs had already left in an arranged bus.

“When I got there, they had just finished and left in the bus. So, as soon as I was entering… the security guys there, myself and the former Deputy Defense Minister…a couple of us, we were all late.

“So, as soon as I got to the job seat, the security guys stood up… not knowing there was a leadership briefing at the speaker’s conference room.

“So, after Afenyo Markin finished the caucus meeting, he went to the speaker’s conference room to engage the leadership before he would come and join the caucus at Bawumia’s place, “he said.

He noted that he was not alone, as several other MPs, including a former Deputy Defence Minister, also arrived late and therefore missed the bus to Dr Bawumia’s residence.

Addressing speculation that Afenyo-Markin had been sidelined or deliberately left behind, the Oforikrom MP clarified that the Minority Leader had a separate leadership engagement at the Speaker’s Conference Room after chairing the caucus meeting.

Aidoo said the Minority Leader later left Parliament and proceeded to Dr Bawumia’s residence, where MPs were already waiting for him.

“That was Afenyo’s arrangement? All I knew was we would do a caucus meeting, 8 o’clock and 10 o’clock, we would go to Dr Bawumia’s house.

“So, he chaired the meeting and the information available to me is that he initiated it. He initiated the visit to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s house?” he added.
