What Is Wrong With Ghana’s Internet Service Providers? Telecel/Vodafone And MTN

In today’s world, more than half of all businesses rely on some form of digital communication. The quality of our devices—modems, Wi‑Fi routers—and the reliability of our internet services determine whether online meetings succeed, whether educational tutorials run smoothly, and whether critical transactions such as stock trading or auctions go through without disruption.

When a business depends on real‑time connectivity, an outdated router or congested network from Vodafone or MTN can cost not just time, but millions of cedis in a single day. That is not a theoretical risk; it is a daily reality for many Ghanaians.

So where is the National Communications Authority (NCA) when it matters most?

Ghana must urgently review the details of the contracts signed with the telecom companies we depend on for our modern lifestyle. Key questions demand answers:

  • What requirements exist for these companies to regularly upgrade their network capacity to prevent congestion and delays in business communication?
  • When was the last time these companies met their mandated timelines for equipment or network upgrades?

It is time for a national evaluation. The NCA must enforce standards, ensure compliance, and hold service providers accountable. Ghana deserves telecom services that meet global expectations—just as we expect from ECG, Ghana Water, and every other essential utility.
