Jirapa, (UW/R), Jan. 31, GNA – Voting is progressing steadily and smoothly at the St. Jude’s Basic School in Jirapa, where the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary in the Jirapa Constituency is ongoing.
At about 10:10 am, a total of 296 delegates had cast their votes out of the 777 delegates expected to vote in the constituency to select the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general election.
Mr Francis Amoah, the Jirapa Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that voting started exactly at 7:00 am.
“The first person voted at exactly 7am. We have so far not encountered any challenges. Everything is smooth”, he said.
The GNA observed the presence of several security personnel from the Ghana Police Service at the voting centre to ensure order throughout the exercise.
Five aspirants were contesting the primaries for the mandate of the delegates to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election.
They were Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
Madam Christine Bonbanye-Amadu, a former Municipal Chief Executive for Jirapa, expressed optimism about a successful primary and was hopeful that the delegates in the Constituency would give Dr. Bawumia the nod.
She described Dr. Bawumia as a “man of ideas” and the “most marketed” among the five aspirants, with the capacity to lead the NPP to the “promised land.”
Hajia Ayisha Salifu, the 2024 parliamentary candidate for the Jirapa Constituency, also described Dr. Bawumia as a “compassionate” leader who “has every person at heart.”
She appealed to the party members to set aside individual interests and unite in the collective interest of the party.
