New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Kwabena Agyei Agyepong has described the provisional results of the party’s flagbearer race as disappointing, while calling on party members to remain united and work together going forward.
Provisional results indicate that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is in the lead with over 55 per cent of the votes, with Mr. Agyepong and three other contenders—Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kennedy Agyapong—trailing behind.
Speaking after results began trickling in on Saturday, January 31, Mr. Agyepong acknowledged the outcome but praised the efforts of his team.
“I would say that the results are very disappointing, but it is politics. I take pride in your dedication, your efforts, your commitment to this strategy.”
He stressed the need for unity within the party, noting that the collective decision of members must be respected.
“I am comfortable that at the end of the day, the majority of the party has made a decision. It is now time for us to work in harmony, respect for one another, work together, and present the best version of ourselves to the Ghanaian people so we can earn their respect and trust.”
Mr. Agyepong further disclosed that most of the results had been received and said he had already congratulated the leading candidate.
“We’ve received most of the results of this election. I have just called Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to congratulate him on the victory, and we are awaiting the official statement from the EC,” he said.
