Residents of Kadjebi have accused ECG of what they termed deliberate stealing
Residents of Kadjebi in the Oti Region have expressed disappointment and anger over what they described as persistent overbilling by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), appealing to the Minister of Energy for an urgent intervention.
The residents accused ECG of what they termed “deliberate stealing,” saying the alleged overbilling had imposed undue financial hardship on households and small-scale traders in the area.
Stephen Agyapong, a resident of Martin Kordzi, a suburb of Kadjebi, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that his September 2025 electricity bill stood at GH¢36.71, but he deliberately paid GH¢400.00, leaving a credit balance of GH¢346.35 with ECG.
He said to his dismay, ECG officials disconnected his power supply on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, with the explanation that he owed GH¢1,379.54, which he was required to pay immediately.
Mr Agyapong said he followed up on the matter at the ECG office in Jasikan, where an officer, who pleaded anonymity, acknowledged that there were challenges with the billing system but explained that there was nothing she could do because “the system” reflected that amount as his outstanding bill.
He described the situation as frustrating and unfair, calling on the Minister of Energy to step in to address the problem and protect consumers from what he said were arbitrary charges.
Emmanuel Amewovi, another resident of Kadjebi, shared similar concerns, saying the alleged overbilling had become a common experience among residents and had eroded public confidence in ECG’s billing system.
He also appealed to the energy minister and Management of the ECG to investigate the matter and ensure that customers were billed accurately and transparently.
Madam Gloria Agbeko, a fishmonger in the area, said the situation was affecting her business, as she struggled to cope with high electricity bills that did not reflect her consumption.
She appealed to the authorities to come to the rescue of residents by resolving the overbilling issues to prevent further hardship.
The GNA’s follow-up at the Jasikan office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), where an officer, who requested anonymity, acknowledged the billing challenges and advised affected customers to report to the Commercial Department of the ECG Ho Regional Office for redress.
The residents warned that failure to address the situation could lead to heightened tensions between consumers and ECG officials in the area.
