The lead suspect, Bright Aweh, who has been accused of murdering Immigration Officer Stephen King Amoah, has finally spoken about the charges levelled against him.

During his appearance at the Adabraka District Court on Monday, January 19, 2026, Aweh maintained that he was innocent of the allegations.

Escorted by police officers after the court proceedings, he spoke briefly to journalists while being ushered into a police vehicle.

He expressed hope and optimism that he would emerge victorious from the ordeal.

“I didn’t kill my friend. I’m not a murderer. I will pass through it,” he told journalists.

Aweh, who is standing trial alongside another accused person, Thomas Zigah, is facing charges of conspiracy to murder and murder after police reportedly found a bloodstained camouflage fabric and a fufu pestle wrapped in polythene at his residence.

Background

On July 3, 2025, Amoah went missing after leaving his home to meet Aweh at Ashongman Estates.

His body was discovered days later in a drain at Abom Junction. Investigations revealed that the meeting had been arranged following WhatsApp exchanges involving images of cash, allegedly meant to settle a debt.

Aweh claimed he had given Amoah GH¢500,000 to pay off a debt and retain the balance. However, inconsistencies in his account raised suspicion.

Providing details at a press briefing on Monday, August 4, 2025, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said Amoah left his home on the night of July 3 after reportedly receiving photos of bundles of cash from Aweh, who had promised to repay a debt.

When Amoah failed to return home and his phone became unreachable, a missing person report was filed on July 4, 2025. Police investigations subsequently led to Aweh’s arrest on July 6, 2025.

During interrogation, Aweh admitted to meeting Amoah and handing him GH¢500,000 in cash, claiming that GH¢200,000 was to settle a debt, while the remainder was to be held by Amoah.

Court issues arrest warrant for new suspect in Immigration Officer’s murder

Although Aweh has denied any involvement in Amoah’s death, police say investigations uncovered incriminating evidence, including bloodstains and signs of an attempted cleanup at the prime suspect’s residence.
