The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has disposed of a large consignment of opioid drugs after receiving authorisation from the Tema High Court.

The opioids were intercepted at the Tema Port during a joint inspection in December 2025 by the FDA, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Health minister sounds alarm on illicit opioids

This update was shared on the X page of Channel One TV on Monday, January 18, 2025.

“The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has disposed of large quantities of opioid drugs, following a High Court order,” the post stated.

According to reports, the shipment contained opioid pharmaceuticals adulterated with other substances.

Investigations further revealed multiple documentation breaches, exposing gaps in cargo monitoring and regulatory compliance.

Following these findings, the FDA and the GRA jointly applied to the Tema High Court for permission to destroy the seized drugs.

The court granted the request, directing the FDA to dispose of the consignment in accordance with Section 132(2) of the Public Health Act.
