Bureau of Ghana Languages endorses Ahanta Language orthography for schools
The Bureau of Ghana Languages (BGL) has officially endorsed the Ahanta language orthography for use in educational institutions in Ahanta.
The move forms part of efforts to formalise the teaching and learning of the indigenous language.
In a letter dated January 15, 2026, and addressed to the Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, the Bureau confirmed that the orthography meets the required standards for educational use following an extensive assessment process.

According to the BGL, a three-member team was constituted to evaluate the work of the Ahanta Language Project Committee (ALPC), with a particular focus on how the developed orthography is being implemented.
“The team, accompanied by the Basic Schools’ Coordinator of the Ahanta West Municipal Education Office and the Coordinator of the Pilot Project on Ahanta language teaching, conducted field visits to schools involved in the Pilot Programme,” the letter stated.

The assessment team interacted with teachers, learners, parents, traditional leaders, opinion leaders, church leaders and elders to verify the effectiveness and acceptance of the orthography.
The Bureau noted that, “Key findings, in all, indicate that the orthography meets required standards and that the pilot programme has yielded positive results.”
It further observed strong community support for the initiative, stating that, “Teachers, learners, and parents are enthusiastic about formal indigenous language learning across Ahanta land.”
Based on these findings, the Bureau announced its formal approval of the orthography for academic use.
“In the light of these findings, we officially endorse the use of the Ahanta Language Orthography in schools on Ahanta land and for the development of learning materials,” the letter said.
The endorsement is expected to pave the way for the language to gain national academic recognition.
“This endorsement is a crucial step towards making the Ahanta language examinable at Basic Education and Senior High School levels,” it added.
The BGL also assured stakeholders of its readiness to support the process.
