A construction site meant to symbolise progress has turned into a scene of mourning following a tragic accident at the Ayensudo section of the “Big Push” infrastructure project.
What began as a routine day of earth-moving operations ended in a double tragedy, claiming the lives of two engineers—one who died instantly at the site, and another who succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to hospital.
According to a report filed by Ebenezer Manso-Cudjoe on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the accident involved a heavy-duty bulldozer operated by XNL Construction Company Limited.
The firm is one of the primary contractors undertaking the dualisation of the Takoradi–Agona Junction road network.
The first victim, an engineer who had joined the project barely a week earlier, was killed instantly when the machinery reportedly reversed over him. While initial reports suggested a possible mechanical malfunction during operations, the exact circumstances surrounding the movement of the vehicle remain under investigation.
The second engineer initially survived the impact but sustained life-threatening injuries.
He was rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, the reporter confirmed that he died while on admission, bringing the total death toll to two.
The tragedy has sparked unrest and speculation among residents of the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality.
Some community members have attributed the incident to what they describe as “spiritual pushback,” alleging that the contractors failed to consult or seek guidance from traditional authorities before commencing the project.
Adding to the speculation, some witnesses described the incident as “strange,” alleging that the bulldozer moved on its own without being ignited or operated.
