Ken Ofori-Atta afraid to return to Ghana – Victor Smith

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has disclosed that former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta currently fears returning to Ghana amid ongoing concerns over his legal standing.

Speaking on TV3’s The KeyPoints on Saturday, January 17, 2026, Smith disclosed that Ken Ofori-Atta’s cousin, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, told him in a phone conversation.

“Gabby called me and said Ken Ofori-Atta wants to come but is afraid of how he will be treated,” he said.

Smith said he offered to meet with Ofori-Atta to provide reassurance.

“I told him I wanted to meet Ken and give him the assurance that he will be taken through the legal process, because the Attorney-General, Dr Godfred Yeboah Ayine, gave me that assurance,” he indicated.

The revelation comes amid mounting scrutiny of Ofori-Atta’s activities following his tenure as Minister of Finance.

While the specifics of the alleged legal issues in Ghana were not detailed by Smith, he emphasised that any proceedings would follow the due process of law.

Meanwhile, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has classified Ken Ofori-Atta as an ‘illegal alien’, noting that he has overstayed his permitted admission in the United States.

ICE added that this constitutes a violation of US immigration law and could result in deportation.
