The Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Abena Osei-Asare, put the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, on the spot during his appearance before the committee on Monday, January 12, 2026.

Osei-Asare, while concluding her questioning of the governor, asked a question on the Gold for Reserves (G4R) programme, for which Dr Asiama had no answer.

The central bank had claimed that the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) recorded a loss of about GH¢5.7 billion in 2024 — about GH¢1.8 billion for the Gold for Oil (G4O) programme and GH¢3.8 billion for the Gold for Reserves programme.

During the sitting on Monday, the chairperson of PAC asked the governor, “Finally, I want to find out from you the 3.8 billion loss that you mentioned. Where can I find it in your financial statement for 2024?”

Dr Asiama retorted, “Madam Chair, we will provide that to the committee.”

But Osei-Asare insisted that the governor direct her to the page in the report where the G4R loss for 2024 was, because she was able to find that of the G4O.

“No, because I have seen the 1.8 billion in your financial statement, but I haven’t seen the 3.8, so respectively, if you can show me exactly where the GH¢3.8 billion loss can be located,” she said.

The governor said for a second time, “We will provide that, Madam Chair; respectfully, we’ll come back (sic).”

The PAC chair still demanded the location of the loss in the report, saying, “Governor, this is for 2024. I’m talking about 2024; it’s on the website, but I can’t find the loss of GH¢3.8 billion.”

Dr Asiama then tried to explain that the loss might be for 2023.

But the PAC chairperson told him the report was for the year 2024 and insisted that the report should have that figure.

The governor then ended the matter by saying, “Madam Chair, can we come back? Madam Chair, I’ve promised we’ll come back to provide that clarity.”
