The Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem Sai, has indicated that the former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, could return to the country sooner than anticipated.

Speaking on TV3 on January 10, 2026, on the back of Ofori-Atta’s arrest and detention by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Srem Sai said that Ghanaian authorities have been actively engaged in the matter from the outset.

“We are taking advantage of everything, and it didn’t start today. We have been on this [extradition process] from the very moment that we realised that the former minister was out of the country and was unwilling to return.

“So, we have been doing work to make sure that he returns, and that is what we are committed to doing,” he said.

He further emphasised that Ghana’s authorities are closely collaborating with US law enforcement agencies to facilitate the process.

“We are actually keenly interested and involved in this so, it’s not even about taking advantage of it. We have been on this track from day one. We collaborate with law enforcement agencies from the United States on this matter,” he indicated.

When asked if the process could see Ofori-Atta’s return sooner than anticipated, he affirmed convincingly, stating, “[Ofori-Atta could be back in Ghana] sooner than expected.”
