President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned recent attacks on teachers across the country, describing such acts as criminal and unacceptable.

He expressed particular concern about the handling of a widely publicised case involving students of Kade Senior High School, where a teacher was assaulted for allegedly preventing examination malpractice.

President Mahama raised the issue while addressing delegates at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Conference on January 5, 2026, referencing a viral video from October 2025 that showed students physically attacking a mathematics teacher during an examination period.

According to Mahama, it is deeply troubling that despite the incident being reported to the police, no formal disciplinary or legal action was taken against the students after their parents reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement with the teacher.

GNAT, NAGRAT condemn Kade SHS teacher assault

“I saw the video of the mathematics teacher being beaten because he refused to allow our students to cheat, and they had a sense of entitlement.

“The unfortunate thing is that the matter went to the police station, and they said they settled the matter amicably. How is that? This is assault. It is criminal,” he indicated.

He questioned the precedent such settlements set, arguing that criminal acts should not be reduced to private agreements simply because compensation was paid.

“When we inquired, the police also said the teacher was compensated, so he didn’t want to press charges anymore. At least the children should have been booked and taken through the legal process,” he noted.

President John Dramani Mahama stressed that even if custodial punishment was not pursued, the students should have faced formal sanctions to serve as a deterrent.

“At the very least, they should have been bonded to be of good behaviour for a period of time, so that we can say justice has been done,” he added.

President Mahama assured teachers of his full support and pledged decisive action against violence in the education sector.

“As for assault on teachers, I am with you 100 per cent. We will deal with it,” he said.
