Limited voter registration: EC’s ‘incompetent’ technicians must be changed

The Member of Parliament for Kintampo North, Joseph Kwame Nkrumah, has slammed the Electoral Commission over the continuous experience of network challenges in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise in eleven constituencies in the Bono East Region.

The MP says new applicants in the area were left stranded at various registration centres on Tuesday and Wednesday due to network challenges, contrary to the EC’s assurances of having fixed them.

Speaking to Citi News, Joseph Kwame Kumah said the EC must rectify the challenge immediately for a smooth electoral process.

“At the [Kintampo] municipal EC office, as early as 7.15 am, they had set up and started the process, they were able to produce only five cards. Since then, the machines have been down.

“They are claiming it is a network issue and also a machinery issue. The technicians at EC are not qualified and they must be changed just so we don’t encounter troubles on election day.”

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has instructed its district officers to transition to the offline mode of registration starting Thursday, May 9, 2024.

This decision comes in the wake of some challenges that the commission encountered with the network Wednesday afternoon, which impacted the online mode of registration.

“The Commission apologises for the delays experienced this afternoon.”

“The Commission assures its stakeholders that should there be a backlog of voters at the end of the twenty-one (21) day process, the registration exercise will be extended beyond the 27th of May, 2024 deadline.”
