Sosu to petition IGP over the matter –

Human rights lawyer and Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has disclosed that he will petition the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take action regarding Nungua Gborbu Wulomo marrying a 12-year-old girl.

The 12-year-old Naa Okromo has been married to 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII.

The human rights lawyer expressed great displeasure in the act of the priest stating that marriage should be between two consenting adults.

He also stated that the parents of the 12-year-old girl are accomplices for failing to protect the rights and liberties of their daughter.

The Madina legislator confirmed his decision to petition the IGP to Alfred Ocansey, host of TV3’s Ghana Tonight programme, on Monday, April 1.

“The family is the first unit or the basic unit, of every society. And every child I mean must be protected at all cost until they reach the mandatory adult age of 18. This child does not have the mental capacity, the emotional capacity, the physiological capacity to be in a marriage relationship.” he stated.

He added that “and so for a parent who gives this child away must be very wicked and very heartless,” said lawyer Sosu, adding that such a parent is “neglecting your responsibility as a parent and as it’s been enshrined in law.”

Responding to rumours surrounding his imminent petition to the IGP, lawyer Xavier Sosu said, “That is correct, our petition is read for the IGP by the special grace of God early morning tomorrow [Tuesday, April 2] I’m sure by 9AM the petition will be at the office of the IGP demanding actions in this matter.”

Francis-Xavier Sosu is demanding the arrest and prosecution of the Nungua Gbornu Wulomo, indicating no person is above the laws of the country.

“Her childhood has never been denied, there are many chiefs and queens that were installed chiefs and queens when they were even in their mother’s belly, their rights were never taken away, indeed, it enhanced and gave them certain privileges that ordinary children would not even have,” Nungua Mankralo Tetteh Nii Gbotery Kofi Frankwa told TV3.

According to the customs of their community, Naa Okromo now assumes the traditional name Naa Ayemoede.
