Merck Foundation: Ghana Needs Interventional Radiologists – 1st Lady Rebecca Akufo Addo Appeals |

First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo has appealed to Merck Foundation to help train Interventional Radiologists in Ghana.

She recalled how a lady lost her life during childbirth, leaving behind three small children, including the newborn because of the lack of a Radiologist.

“All she needed was to be seen by an interventional radiologist. Unfortunately, Ghana has only one radiologist so she died. Currently, Ghana has only one active and two retired cardiac anesthesiologists who help when they can. So Rasha (CEO of Merck Foundation), this is my request; we need a radiologist, we urgently need to train four cardiac anesthesiologists and additional interventional Radiologists. The candidates are ready. All we need is the opportunity” she appealed.

Madam Rebecca speaking at the 10th Edition of “Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary”, held in India, acknowledged how her partnership with Merck Foundation has been one of the best strategic partnerships for her office and the Rebecca Foundation

“In Ghana, I have become one of the strongest advocates for the health of women and children and the Rebecca Foundation is now recognized as a strategic partner for our Ministry of Health. In all humility, this has been possible because of strategic partners like the Merck Foundation. This partnership has helped us develop a more extensive health innovation initiative. Today, we are no longer restricted to building renovating and resourcing health facilities. Merck Foundation has allowed us to access new resources, knowledge and networks that enhance our work….How else could we have trained more than a hundred and thirty public health care providers in 39 diverse disciplines? First Lady Rebecca averred.

The 10th Edition of “Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary” was in partnership with Tata Memorial Centre and Department of Atomic Energy, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Health of India, State Protocol Office of Government of Maharashtra and Krishna World University, Karad, on the 18th of October 2023 in Mumbai, India. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, Chairman of Merck Foundation Board of Trustees, and Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and Chairperson of Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary, along with African First Ladies of 11 countries.

Merck Foundation took arts to another level when it unveiled the first animation film that addresses the diabetes prevention and early detection in Africa: “Sugar Free Jude”

According to Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej, “this is another huge step of ours towards using art and creativity to address different sensitive health and social issues in Africa”.

“Sugar Free Jude” is of course one of the series of 7 Animation films we are releasing, on various topics like Hypertension Awareness, Supporting Girl Education, Ending GBV and Child Marriage and more. All our animation films will help to communicate important messages, not only to children but also to adults, in a very entertaining way”, she added.
