Akosombo Spillage: Build Mini-dams To Reserve Water – Ayeh-Paye Tells VRA |

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayensuano constituency, Samuel Ayeh-Paye, has expressed disgust over the spillage of water from the Akosombo dam to nearby communities resulting in floods.

About 1800 victims of the flood have been rescued by the Ghana Armed Forces following the Akosombo dam spillage.

The destruction of properties and the environment as a result of the spillage has become a matter of concern to Hon. Ayeh-Paye.

Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo”, Samuel Ayeh-Paye wondered why the management of the Volta River Authority has done nothing to address the problem.

To him, it is unacceptable that till date since the dam was constructed, the water is spilled into communities when it can be utilized.

“Let us build mini-dams along the stretch of the river to reserve water…The water that goes to join the sea is too much. It should have been that whenever we finish generating the power, less than 10 percent should enter the sea and the rest, we must be able to utilize it,” he proposed while calling on the Authority to set aside a fund.

However, government has constituted an inter-ministerial Committee to tackle the issue.

A statement from the Ministry of Information said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had ordered the setting-up of the team to “coordinate government’s response to the unfortunate flooding of some communities following spilling from the Volta Dam”.

The thirteen-member Committee will be headed by Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.
