At the 16th Headies Awards in 2023, Ghanaian superstar Black Sherif was named the “West African Artiste of the Year.”
His distinct style and storytelling distinguish him, and this incredible victory further cemented his position as the leading force in West African music.
Artists of West African descent who significantly influenced the music landscape on the continent throughout the year were honored in the “West African Artiste of the Year” category.
The musician defeated competitors from the West African region, including fellow citizens Camidoh and Gyakie.
After accepting the prize, Black Sherif thanked his supporters throughout Africa, particularly in Konongo Zongo, the town of his birth.
Afrobeats artists Ayra Starr, Asake, Rema, Victony, KCee, Oxlade, Johnny Drille, Blaqbonez, Spyro, Seyi Vibez, and FireBoyDML performed at the 16th Headies Awards.
The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta hosted the 2023 Headies Awards, which honored African music’s increasing popularity around the world.
“Thank you so much to the fans, to the listeners. Thank you Headies, thank you Nigeria Thank you Ghana, thank you Konongo Zongo, I love you,” Black Sherif said.
Black Sherif initially gained popularity in 2021 with his song “First Sermon,” which he released that May. This was followed up with the “Second Sermon” in July.
His breakthrough came in March 2022 with his hit single “Kwaku the Traveller,” which reached Number 1 on the Ghanaian and Nigerian Apple charts. (Its music video has been viewed 17 million times.) He then released his debut album, The Villain I Never Was, on October 5, 2022.
