MP Charges African, European Leaders

0

Majority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, says African and European decision makers need to adapt their cooperation to respond to challenges of today and in the future.

According to him, this is especially of importance as autocratic players such as China and Russia are increasing their activities on the African continent to promote an opposing model of governance.

Speaking at the 2022 German-African Conference of Parliamentarians in Berlin, Mr Annoh-Dompreh stated, “In light of the new EU-Africa strategy adopted in February, 2022, this year is an important one for the European-African parliamentarian dialogue.”

The EU, in February this year, revealed the first regional plan of its Global Gateway investment scheme, with African states set to receive €150 billion in funding, and the NPP MP praised the EU’s plan to become Africa’s “strongest partner” by 2030.

The conference was held in Berlin in Germany from May 9 to 10, 2022, with representatives drawn across the African continent and Europe.

The conference was centred on Africa and Europe relationship in the age of a new geopolitical rivalry and how to improve bilateral cooperation.

“Bringing all African heads of states together to meet in Moscow was not ordinary. And all the other parts of the world are now focusing on Africa. When you create a vacuum that vacuum must be filled. There is hope because naturally you are the people we gravitate towards,” Annoh-Dompreh indicated.

He said Africans also need clarity of reasoning, adding, “We should not be talking about too many things at the same time. As Africans we should know exactly what we want. What is it we want? Is it technology transfer? And our colleague has talked about the energy transition.”

As Africans, we have missed out in a number of things such as the global development and industrial revolution. But this one we shouldn’t miss out because now you see, everybody is pointing his fingers at us,” he posited.

He continued, “What it means is that we should also hold our leaders accountable for them to speak to the rightful narrative.”

Captain Planet Has Blocked Me And I Haven’t Reached Out To Him – Coded of 4×4 |

Coded of 4×4 fame has alleged that he is unavailable to reach out to his former groupmate, Captain Planet because he has blocked him.

In an interview on Accra-based CTV on Tuesday, he didn’t know why his friend blocked him.

“He has still blocked me and I’ve not reached out to him because that is his personal decision, but his wife has not blocked me and we still follow each other,” Coded said.

The group 4×4 made up of Coded, Captain Planet and Fresh Prince collapsed several years ago after they released hits upon hit songs.

A couple of weeks ago Coded 4×4 had come out to say he missed the group. They would have been organising their concerts and tours if the group was still alive.

'Enough!' Abortion denial row sparks outcry in Croatia

0

The heart-rending case of a woman denied an abortion by four hospitals despite the foetus having an aggressive tumour has sparked an outcry over women’s rights in largely Catholic Croatia.

Despite the procedure being legal in the European Union member, Mirela Cavajda is now being forced to have a termination in neighbouring Slovenia.

The case comes amid a political storm in the United States over fears abortion rights there are being undermined, with the landmark Roe v. Wade case that guaranteed a woman’s right to choose reportedly under threat from the Supreme Court.

Abortion is equally contested in Croatia, with church groups failing in a bid to have it banned five years ago and a majority of gynaecologists refusing to perform the procedure.

Cavajda was told in late April, in the sixth month of pregnancy, that her unborn child had an aggressive brain tumour.

Even if he survived birth, doctors said “he would be like a vegetable”, she told reporters through her tears.

“I came home, sat down and stared at the wall… I made the decision in a second,” said the 39-year-old, who already has a child.

Emotional blackmail
In Croatia abortion is legal until the 10th week of pregnancy. After that it can be performed if the health of the mother or foetus is in serious danger — as in Cavajda’s case — or because of rape or incest.

However, four hospitals in the capital Zagreb refused to carry out an abortion.

One doctor asked Cavajda whether she would “kill a two-year-old child with a tumour”, while another labelled the procedure “euthanasia”.

Cavajda was also advised to cross the border to Slovenia, where at least 10 Croatian women a year in similar situations have to turn.

However, as fury about the case grew and an MRI scan showed the foetus’ condition deteriorating, a medical commission ruled that an abortion could go ahead.

Abortion was legalised in Croatia in the 1950s and is regulated by a 1978 law passed when it was still part of Yugoslavia. But since independence in 1991, when the Catholic Church regained political clout, it has become harder to access with many doctors raising “consciousness objections” to terminations.

Indeed, nearly 60 percent of gynaecologists in public hospitals refuse to perform them on moral grounds.

In an emotional public letter, in which she also addressed her unborn baby boy whom she named Grga, Cavajda said that both doctors and the system had let her down and prolonged her ordeal.

“Waiting for Grga to die inside my womb, (or) give birth to him and watch him die… would be pure sadism.

“I would die with him,” she wrote.

Last week thousands of people protested across the Balkan country about the neglect of women’s health issues under the rallying call, “Enough!”

‘Going backwards’
Dentist Sonja Kraljevic warned against the country “going backwards”, telling AFP that “women should have all (the rights)… they acquired a long time ago.”

Branka Mrzic Jagatic, whose advocacy group RODA helped organise the rallies, said the “case exposed that women’s healthcare in our public health system has collapsed completely.”

In 2019, the traditionally patriarchal Balkans was shaken by a tide of #MeToo revelations about the verbal and physical violence women were suffering in childbirth and at the hands of gynaecologists.

RODA gathered hundreds of testimonies on painful and humiliating experiences at births, abortions and other procedures after a former Croatian lawmaker talked publicly about the agonising treatment she received after a miscarriage.

At one of last week’s protests a letter was read out from a woman who suffered a horrifying ordeal during an abortion due to foetal abnormalities.

“A nurse told me to go to the toilet and, if I want an autopsy, hold the foetus with my hands… I saw him and held him in my hands,” she wrote.

‘Culture of death’
But with 80 percent of Croats Catholic, the country is divided on abortion and its top court rejected a bid by church groups to have it banned in 2017.

“Life is important, I don’t think we can interrupt it,” said Josipa Brajko, one of several thousand people who joined the annual anti-abortion “March for Life” through Zagreb at the weekend.

Its organisers want new legislation “based on science and not on ideology and the culture of death.”

Gynaecologist Boris Ujevic told the crowd that he refuses to carry out terminations because “life should be respected and life is law.”

But women’s rights activists said women should have guaranteed access to all healthcare including abortion.

Although Croatia’s Supreme Court ruled that the 1978 law needs to be overhauled, the ruling conservative government appear reluctant to tackle the thorny issue.

Left-wing parties, meanwhile, are mulling a referendum to enshrine the right to abortion in the country’s constitution.

Cavajda is now to terminate her pregnancy in Slovenia although Croatia’s health system will cover the costs.

A Zagreb hospital said she declined to be induced in Croatia which would risk the baby dying after birth whereas in Slovenia the heart is stopped before the procedure.

Cape Coast Technical University students grieve over brutish murder of colleague

Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU)
Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU)

The gruesome murder of Nana Ama Clark, a level 300 Marketing student of the Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU), has thrown the university community into a state of shock and grief.

The brutish killing of the 24-year-old “brilliant and promising” student, as described by her school, occurred barely four months to complete her three-year HND course and two days to her birthday, Sunday, May 15.

In a sombre atmosphere, characterized by weeping and dirges, some students of CCTU held a vigil on her birthday to mourn and eulogise her.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the University’s campus and to the hostel where Ms Clark lived, saw some students in dejected moods and some, physically traumatised by the incident.

One of her coursemates she lived with in the same hostel, told the GNA that she had been experiencing headaches from crying since the day the unfortunate news broke out.

She described Nana Ama Clark as a “cool person” who hardly spoke unless she was engaged.

“She was very reserved and always in her space. We are all in shock and I cannot get over it anytime soon. We finished with our last paper last Thursday and I planned on leaving this Thursday but I cannot stay any longer and so I will leave Cape Coast today,” she revealed.

Narrating how the news got to her, the friend who pleaded anonymity, said she was asleep around 1000 hours Saturday when some of her colleagues knocked on her door to ask her of Ms Clark’s room and she directed them.

She said some of the students, including class representatives, had heard of the murder and were going round to be sure everyone was safe.

Ms Clark was not in her room when they visited and all efforts to reach her via phone were not successful, she added.

She said the Police later sent her name and index number to the school’s administration to confirm the identity of the deceased.

“I don’t know how to explain the feeling. We have just four months to leave school but she has been killed,” she said, showing a bloodshot eye.

A level 200 student, Daniel Dougan said he saw her around 15:00hours in an elated mood after she wrote her last paper.

“I was so sad when I heard the news and realised she was the one in the picture my friends showed to me. She was a cool girl” he said.

In spite of the development, some of the student said they did not feel insecure because of the presence of some security personnel at the hostel.

Meanwhile, the boyfriend of the deceased, Nicholas Ato Bronk Taylor, has been remanded into Police custody by a Cape Coast District Court in connection with the murder.

Taylor’s plea was not taken and he is expected back in Court on Tuesday, May 31, 2022.

The University on the other hand, had called on the Ghana Police Service to expedite action on investigating the case.

In a statement dated May 16, 2022 and copied to the Ghana News Agency, the management of the school described the incident as tragic and therefore called for the swift arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the “gruesome murder”.

“It is difficult to comprehend and express the enormity of the loss of this bright and promising young Student,” the statement said and further commiserated with the family of the deceased.

The school, however, assured students, parents, and the public that security at the University remained strong.

Police & FA investigating Crystal Palace boss after kicking a fan

Police and the Football Association are investigating after Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira was involved in an altercation with a fan following their Premier League defeat at Everton.

Television footage showed him being taunted by an Everton supporter as fans ran on to the pitch at full-time.

The Frenchman appeared to kick out at the fan before being ushered away by other supporters.

Police say they have not received a formal complaint about the incident.

“Merseyside Police is investigating an altercation on the pitch at Goodison Park following the Everton v Crystal Palace match on Thursday,” the force said in a statement.

“We are working with Everton to gather all available CCTV footage and are speaking to witnesses.

“No formal complaint has been received and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”

Everton staged a stunning comeback to win and retain their top-flight status.

“I have nothing to say about that,” Vieira said when asked about the incident during his post-match news conference.

Everton manager Frank Lampard said: “I feel for Patrick. I didn’t get him at the end. I would have said, ‘come in with us’ – although he might not have wanted that.

“Of course he ran 80 yards across the pitch and it’s not easy.”

On the pitch invasion, Lampard added: “It was pure elation of fans who have come on the pitch after avoiding relegation.

“If it is done in the right way let them stay on the pitch, let them have their moment. As long as they behave, no problem.”

Speaking on Sky Sports, former England striker Dion Dublin said: “We know how overjoyed the Everton fans are but you can’t be doing that. You can’t be pushing managers and pushing players, touching players and shouting in their faces.

“We know it is only one or two who spoiled it for everyone else. Having fans on the pitch is not the way forward. We need to stop letting fans, or allowing fans to get on the pitch. It is too dangerous.”

Vieira’s confrontation at Goodison Park comes amid rising concerns over pitch invasions in English football following a number of recent high-profile incidents.

Footage on social media also appeared to show Swindon players involved in a confrontation with Port Vale fans following Vale’s League Two semi-final shootout win on Thursday.

The other League Two semi-final, played on Wednesday, also ended in a pitch invasion with Mansfield boss Nigel Clough saying such incidents are “getting concerning” after his player Jordan Bowery appeared to be shoved by a fan late on in their win at Northampton.

Earlier on Thursday, a fan was jailed after running on to a pitch and headbutting Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp at the end of the Blades’ Championship play-off semi-final shootout defeat by Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

Spanish GP: Aston Martin’s ‘Red Bull lookalike’ car cleared after FIA investigation into upgrades

Sky F1’s Ted Kravitz comments on accusations that Aston Martin have developed a ‘green Red Bull’ car.

Sky F1’s Ted Kravitz comments on accusations that Aston Martin have developed a ‘green Red Bull’ car.

Aston Martin have been cleared to use their new-look car despite its similarities to Red Bull’s after an FIA investigation confirmed there had been “no wrongdoing” and that the upgrades were “compliant”.

Many teams have brought major upgrades to the Spanish GP but Aston Martin’s significantly different AMR22 has stood out because of its several similar features to the Red Bull, which is currently F1’s fastest car.

F1 has been keen to stamp out ‘copycat’ attempts in recent years, and Aston Martin, formerly known as Racing Point, were actually penalised back in 2020 for a car dubbed a ‘Pink Mercedes’.

With the new car nicknamed a ‘green Red Bull’ this week, Red Bull had been questioning the updates.

But Aston Martin had been insistent that they designed the car over the winter, and the FIA confirmed the car passed a a ‘pre-event legality check’ in Barcelona.

“During this [legality check], it became apparent that a number of features on the Aston Martin resembled those of another competitor,” read a statement from F1’s governing body.

“The FIA therefore launched an investigation to check compliance with Article 17.3 of the Technical Regulations, and in particular the topic of ‘Reverse Engineering’ and potential illicit IP transfer.

“Both teams collaborated fully with the FIA in this investigation and provided all the relevant information.

“The investigation, which involved CAD checks and a detailed analysis of the development process adopted by Aston Martin, confirmed that no wrongdoing had been committed, and therefore the FIA considers that the Aston Martin aerodynamic upgrades are compliant.”

The FIA said Article 17.3 “specifically defines and prohibits ‘Reverse Engineering’, i.e. the digital process of converting photographs (or other data) to CAD models, and prohibits IP transfer between teams, but equally, this Article permits car designs getting influenced by those of competitors, as has always been the case in Formula 1.”

“In the analysis we carried out we confirmed that the processes followed by Aston Martin were consistent with this Article’s requirements.”

Explaining the Aston Martin controversy

Sky Sports’ Ted Kravitz

“Many were calling it a Red Bull lookalike Aston Martin

“Red Bull were questioning because there has been some movement from some people from Red Bull to Aston Martin over the winter and over the last few months and there were some questions from Red Bull over whether those people had taken any data with them.

“Of course that would be breaking their contract with leaving Red Bull.

“That is hotly denied by Aston Martin and they say they have shared the detail of their latest update with the FIA and all their people.

“The FIA have been to the factory at Silverstone to look at the data and all of the processes used to create this new update package which looks like the Red Bull and the FIA have confirmed to Aston Martin, in writing, that their new update has been generated as a result of legitimate, independent work by Aston Martin themselves within the technical regulations.”

Sky Sports accused of being racist after Patrick Viera incident.

0

Africans have always been maligned in many ways. We are considered inferior in many things. We don’t get the recognition and respect we sometimes deserve. Many media organisations outside Africa tend to broadcast more negative news about Africans or black people than the good ones. Sky Sports, a sports media house based in the UK has been exposed again for its racist posture.

African footballers have always been abused racially in so many places. Instead of the media organisations helping stamp out racism, they are sometimes promoting it through their actions. Normally Sky Sports limits their videos to only audiences in specific geographical locations. If you are outside those jurisdictions, you won’t be able to watch their videos. But it seems when it involves a negative story about a black man, it is broadcasted to the whole world to view removing the location restriction.

When the Kurt Zouma cat video came out, the location restriction was removed for the whole world to see because it involves a black man. Crystal Palace coach Patrick Viera was involved in an altercation with an Everton fan who was taunting him after they lost to them yesterday. Viera got infuriated and kicked the fan. Sky Sports once again removed the location restriction on the video and broadcasted it worldwide for all to see because a black man was involved.

If we are serious about removing racism from the game, then some of these media houses must stop what they are doing. Sky Sports should be ashamed of themselves. Below are some tweets about the incident.
