Pga Championship, the Spaniards dream big

Few times has a ‘major’ come at such a good time for the interests of Spanish golfers, as it happens in this PGA Championship. The ‘Armada’ is represented in Southern Hills (Tulsa, Oklahoma) by Jon Rahm, Pablo Larrazábal, Adri Arnaus and Sergio García.

The first three have won this season – Larrazábal twice -, while Sergio faces the tournament as the Spanish player who has participated in a greater number of majors along with José María Olazábal, with 93 both.

Pga Championship, Spain

The most recent wins came just two weeks ago. The ‘Lion of Barrika’ won the Mexican Open, where he recovered sensations and sharpened his claws; the same Sunday, Arnaus debuted on the DP World Tour by winning in Girona; Larrazábal’s boost in the world ranking was extraordinary thanks to his successes in South Africa and Tarragona.

‘Rahmbo’ debuts in the Southern Hills, although he admits that he has always streaked high in ‘unknown’ fields. In this case, Jon tested the course early last week. The Basque is still the best player from tee to green on the circuit, as his statistics attest.

If he continues to putt well, he’ll be in contention on Sunday. The tournament has reserved the main match for him along with Scottie Scheffler, without a doubt the player of the moment as well as number one, and Collin Morikawa.

The top three in the world ranking will be closely watched, although Jon is the only one who can take the top spot from Scheffler. For this to happen, the Spaniard must win and his rival must be behind fifth place. Another year there is talk of the possibility of Jordan Spieth completing the Grand Slam if he finally succeeds in the PGA Championship; he would be the sixth player to do so.

The ‘wonder boy’ seems to have generated the moment after consecutively achieving a victory and second place. Spieth has been framed in the game that will attract the most public, since he will be with Rory Mcilroy, also at a good time, and Tiger Woods.

The question is if the Tiger is to win the 16th ‘major’ of him. In Augusta he showed signs that he can still perform at a high level, although the tournament was long. There are reasons for optimism with the Californian golfer, who continues to work hard to strengthen his leg and to assemble his swing according to the reduced range of motion he has after the accident.

Although the Southern Hills course has changed since he won the 2007 PGA there, he has announced more than just a fight: “I feel like I can win, I just have to go out and compete and do it. I’ll be ready on Thursday,” he told the conference.

press. Tiger added: “I’m better than the last time I played [the Masters]. I fell apart there because I was getting more and more tired, I didn’t have the stamina I wanted. I know I’ll have limitations now, but I’m stronger.”

Of course, you will not be able to lose sight of established players in the greats such as Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas or Brooks Koepka, as well as Schauffele, Cantlay and Cam Smith. The battle begins this Thursday.

Merseyside Police investigating Vieira altercation

An altercation involving Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira on the Goodison Park pitch is being investigated by Merseyside police.

The incident took place in the aftermath of Everton’s 3-2 comeback win over Palace in the Premier League on Thursday.

Widely circulated social media footage appeared to show Vieira kicking out at a supporter after being goaded, as Everton fans flooded onto the playing surface after Frank Lampard’s team secured their top-flight status.

While Vieira refused to comment on the incident at his post-match news conference, the police have now announced an investigation, while reports suggest the Football Association has launched its own probe.

“Merseyside Police is investigating an altercation on the pitch at Goodison Park following the Everton v Crystal Palace match,” read a statement released on Friday.

“We are working with Everton FC to gather all available CCTV footage and are speaking to witnesses. No formal complaint has been received and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”

Meanwhile, a separate statement released by the force confirmed three men had been arrested for entering – or attempting to enter – Goodison Park with pyrotechnics on Thursday, while another was arrested for a breach of the police but later de-arrested.

The unsavoury scenes follow similar incidents being witnessed at several Football League play-off matches recently – a fan was jailed for assaulting Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp after the team’s defeat at Nottingham Forest earlier this week, while pitch invasions have also occurred at Huddersfield Town, Northampton Town, and Port Vale in recent days.

China condemns Canada’s ‘groundless’ Huawei 5G ban |

0

China on Friday hit out at Ottawa for blocking Chinese telecoms giants Huawei and ZTE from Canadian 5G networks, describing the ban as “groundless” ban and based on spurious security risks.

Canada’s long-awaited move follows the United States and other key allies, and comes on the heels of a diplomatic row between Ottawa and Beijing over the detention of a senior Huawei executive on a US warrant, which has now been resolved.

“China is firmly opposed to this,” foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters of the 5G block, adding Beijing would “take all necessary measures” to protect Chinese companies.

“This move runs counter to market economy principles and free trade rules,” he added.

Canadian Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne made the announcement on Thursday, citing their “intention to prohibit the inclusion of Huawei and ZTE products and services in Canada’s telecommunication systems.”

The United States has warned of the security implications of giving Chinese tech companies access to telecommunications infrastructure that could be used for state espionage.

Both Huawei and Beijing have rejected the allegations, while Beijing warned of repercussions for nations placing restrictions on the telecoms equipment provider.

Wang on Friday accused the Canadian government of “seriously damaging the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.”

Belarus charges Nexta co-founder with organising 'terrorist' group

0

Belarus on Friday launched new criminal charges against the co-founder of the opposition Telegram channel Nexta, Stepan Putilo, accusing him of organising a “terrorist” organisation, the Belta state news agency reported.

Run from abroad, the Nexta Telegram channels helped mobilise historic anti-government protests in the ex-Soviet country in 2020 after the disputed re-election of strongman Alexander Lukashenko for a sixth term in power.

The channel was co-founded by Putilo and Roman Protasevich, another Belarusian activist who was arrested in Belarus in May last year when his Athens to Vilnius Ryanair flight was diverted and forced to land in the Belarusian capital Minsk.

Putilo currently lives in Warsaw, while Protasevich remains under house arrest in Belarus after he appeared in confession videos that allies believe were made under duress.

According to Belta, Belarusian investigators said Putilo and another Nexta staffer Yan Rudik were charged with “directing the activities of a terrorist organisation Nexta”.

“Since 2020, the defendants have used their information resources to destabilise the situation on the territory of Belarus and radicalise the so-called protests,” investigators added.

They said “the terrorists have repeatedly called for inciting social hatred and discord, blocking roads and coordinating street riots, committing terrorist attacks on the railway and sabotage at enterprises that could lead to made-made disasters”.

Putilo already faces a number of criminal charges such as inciting social hatred and treason, and is on international wanted lists in Belarus and in Russia.

In 2020, Putilo and Protasevich were placed on Belarus’s list of terrorists, while Nexta was designated a “terrorist organisation”.

On Wednesday, Belarus — the only country in Europe that continues to carry out executions — introduced the death penalty for attempts to carry out acts of terrorism.

Mahama Started The Sale Of The Achimota Forest – Sylvester Tetteh Reveals; Ghanaians Massively React

0

The member of Parliament for Bortianor-ngleshie Amanfro constituency in the Greater Accra region, Honorable Sylvester Tetteh has dropped some allegations against former president John Mahama.

In his recent interview on Metro TV, the MP revealed that John Mahama was the one who started the sale of Achimota Forest.

“On the 5th of September, 2013, the then President of the republic of Ghana, John Mahama gave executive approval for the conversion of the forest reserve into an Echo Tourism Park in 2013 and to release the peripheral portions of the forest reserve to the family” he said.

He added that it was John Mahama that started and not Ghana’s incumbent president. He added that the deal between the family of the land and the government in 2013 caused a lot of leases on the land.

“I don’t want to believe that at the time John Mahama was taking that decision, he was stealing the land” he added.

Honorable Sylvester believes urged Ghanaians to stay calm and cause this government has no intention of selling any portion of the land.

Hindu extremists target Muslim sites in India, even Taj Mahal

0

Thirty years after mobs demolished a historic mosque in Ayodhya, triggering a wave of sectarian bloodshed that saw thousands killed, fundamentalist Indian Hindu groups are eyeing other Muslim sites — even the world-famous Taj Mahal.

Emboldened under Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aided by courts and fuelled by social media, the fringe groups believe the sites were built on top of Hindu temples, which they consider representations of India’s “true” religion.

Currently most in danger is the centuries-old Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities, where Hindus are cremated by the Ganges.

Last week reports claimed a leaked court-mandated survey of the mosque had discovered a shivalinga, a phallic representation of the Hindu god Shiva, at the site.

“This means that is the site of a temple,” government minister Kaushal Kishore, a member of Modi’s BJP party, told local media, saying that Hindus should now pray there.

Muslims have already been banned from performing ablutions in the water tank where the alleged relic — mosque authorities say it is a fountain — was found.

– Religious riots –
The fear now is that the Islamic place of worship will go the way of the Ayodhya mosque, which Hindu groups believe was built on the birthplace of Ram, another deity.

The frenzied destruction of the 450-year-old building in 1992 sparked religious riots in which more than 2,000 people died, most of them Muslims, who number 200 million in India.

The demolition was also a seminal moment for Hindutva — Hindu supremacy — paving the way for Modi’s rise to power in 2014.

The movement’s core tenet has long been that Hinduism is India’s original religion, and that everything else — from the Mughals, originally from Central Asia, to the British — is alien.

Some groups have even set their sights on UNESCO world heritage site the Taj Mahal, India’s best-known monument attracting millions of visitors every year.

Despite no credible evidence, they believe that the 17th-century mausoleum was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan on the site of a Shiva shrine.

“It was destroyed by Mughal invaders so that a mosque could be built there,” Sanjay Jat, spokesman for the hardline organisation Hindu Mahasabha, told AFP.

This month a court petition was filed by a member of Modi’s party trying to force India’s archaeological body, the ASI, to open up 20 rooms inside, believing they contained Hindu idols.

The ASI said there were no such idols and the court summarily dismissed the petition.

But it was not the first such case — and it is unlikely to be the last.

“I will continue to fight for this till my death,” Jat said.

“We respect the courts but if needed we will demolish the Taj and prove the existence of a temple there.”

‘Gospel truth’
Audrey Truschke, an associate professor of South Asian history with Rutgers University, said the claims about the Taj Mahal are “about as reasonable as the proposals that the Earth is flat”.

“So far as I can discern, there is not a coherent theory about the Taj Mahal at play here so much as a frenzied and fragile nationalist pride that does not allow anything non-Hindu to be Indian and demands to erase Muslim parts of Indian heritage,” she told AFP.

But while the demolition of the Taj Mahal remains — for now, at least — a pipe-dream of the fundamentalists, other sites are also in the crosshairs.

They include the Shahi Idgah mosque in Mathura, built by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb after he attacked the city and destroyed its temples in 1670.

The mosque is next to a later temple built on what is believed to be the birthplace of the Hindu god Krishna.

On Thursday a court agreed to hear a lawsuit demanding the removal of the mosque, one of a slew of similar petitions.

Police in the northern city have been put on alert.

Another is Delhi’s Qutub Minar, a 13th-century minaret and victory tower built by the Mamluk dynasty, also from Central Asia.

Some Hindu groups believe it was constructed by a Hindu king and that the complex housed more than 25 temples.

Such claims were born of a “very sparse” knowledge of the past, historian Rana Safvi told AFP.

Instead, a “sense of victimhood” was being fuelled by social media misinformation, she said, “making them believe it’s the gospel truth”.

Mikel Arteta has growing belief Norwich will beat Tottenham to hand Arsenal fourth spot

M

ikel Arteta says he is growing in belief that Norwich could yet do Arsenal a huge favour against Tottenham on the final day of the season, believing it is still “very possible” that his side will be playing Champions League football next season.

Arteta cut a despondent figure at St. James’ Park on Monday night, following a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle that saw his side surrender the initiative in the top-four race.

The Gunners need to win against Everton at the Emirates on Sunday and hope already relegated Norwich can beat Spurs at Carrow Road in order to usurp their north London rivals.

“[It is] very possible and looking back, I have been back a few years and I’ve seen examples of teams playing in the last game of the season and things happening,” Arteta said. “The closer the game is, [the more] I am hopeful.”

Arsenal’s chances of at least keeping up their end of the bargain by beating Everton may well have been boosted after the Toffees secured their own Premier League survival with a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down to beat Crystal Palace 3-2 on Thursday night.

Arteta said he had been watching his former club in that game, with the dramatic nature of Everton’s unlikely fightback giving him further belief that Norwich could similarly defy the odds when they host Spurs on Sunday.

“I was watching yesterday and that gives me more encouragement about what could happen on the last day at Norwich because this happens only in this league,” he added.

“It’s what makes this league such an incredible league because in many other countries when there is nothing to play for you don’t see those kind of performances. We are hoping something special can happen.”

Even a fifth-placed finish would represent significant progress for the Gunners, who finished eighth in each of the past two seasons, and have enjoyed a season of progress under Arteta, not only in terms of results but also in uniting a club and fanbase that has often appeared divided since the latter part of Arsene Wenger’s reign.

But while the Spaniard is aware of those signs of development, he reiterated his stance that the long-term aim is not merely to return the Gunners to the Champions League, but to the top of English football.

“It is [progress] because we have created expectations that this club deserves and this club has to have but in the last two matches we haven’t been able to fulfil those expectations,” he added. “Overall looking back at where we were, you have to be clear as well with what we had to do and we are clear this is not where we want to be. We want to be in a completely different position, challenging the top teams and that is the aim.

This is not going to stop here, there is another step but this was very much necessary. Not only about where we are in the league table, we had much deeper issues at the club than the league table in my opinion that now have been resolved and now they look very strong and we have real strong foundations to build what we want to do.”
