Sixteen farmers and Fishers receive Awards in Yendi

Yendi(NR) Dec. 6,
GNA – Sixteen Farmers and Fishers on Friday received awards in the Yendi as
part of the 2019 National Best Farmers award.

The overall
Municipal best farmer went to Alhassan Alhassan of Zakoli, and he took home
Motor tricycle (Motor King), Knapsack, sprayer, one pair of wellington boot,
two cutlasses, five pick sacks, the Municipal First Runner-p went to Fuseini
Nassam of Kpatuya, who took home double decker fridge, knapsacks  sprayer, wellington boots, two cutlasses and
four pick sacks.

The Municipal
physically challenged Best Farmer in cereals and legumes went to Alhassan Nuhu
of Sunsong, who took home a bicycle and knapsack sprayer, while the Municipal
best Fisher went to Napari Tijabapo of Kulkpinduli, who took home a bicycle,
fishing net, hook and line, pair of wellington boots and a cutlass.

The Municipal Best
crop farmer in root and tuber went to Jibreel Iddirisu of Nakpachei, who took
home a bicycle Knapsack, pair of wellington boot, cutlass and two pick sacks.

The rest were;
Municipal Best Women Agric Officer went to Madam Naomy Zaato of Malzeri, who
took home 32-inch flat screen TV, Knapsack Sprayer, Pair of wellington boot,
among others.

The 35th Edition
of the National Farmers Day Celebration was attended by chiefs, farmers, Heads
of Department, women Groups youth, political party representatives, security
Agents, among others.

In his address
Alhaji Hammed Abubakari Yussif, the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive said the
Government identified the essential role agriculture in the Socio-economic
development of the country and therefore put in place projects and programmes
as Planting Food and Jobs, Rearing for Food and Jobs, JICA Rain Fed Rice
Technology Export and Rural Development (PERD) among others to better the lot
of the farm families, rural communities and the Municipality as a whole.

He said Government
was concerned about the negative effects of the climate change on the
agriculture productivity and cautioned them against indiscriminate
deforestation and bush burning.

In a welcome address
read on his behalf the over lord of Dagbon Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II thanked God
for protecting the farmers, Fishers throughout the season and making some of
them to receive best awards.

He commended the
farmers and the fishers for their hard work in producing large quality of
foodstuff and fish.

Madam Musah Abibah,
the Municipal Director of Agriculture said in pursuance of the food and human
security needs of the Municipality in 2019, the department of Agric in the
Municipality in the course of the year undertook several agriculture activities
in collaboration with NGOS and other Development Partners.

She announced that
one other problem that was taking a toll on human lives was inappropriate
handling and use of agro-chemicals.

She said many
agro-chemical dealers especially vendors/retailers in the local markets were
either ignorant or had inadequate knowledge about their safe handling.

She said the
Department will identify and train all untrained agents of agro-input dealers
in safe handling and application of agro-chemicals
