Tema, Nov. 09, GNA –
A cross section of the public and aspiring candidates for the forthcoming
District Level Election has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) and
National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to intensify public education on
the December 17 Elections.

They called on the
EC and NCCE to galvanize support and create awareness to get the electorates to
fully understand and participate in the forthcoming election.

The call was made at
a public forum organised jointly by EC and NCCE with various stakeholders ahead
of the upcoming election slated on December 17.

The forum also
afforded the aspirants the opportunity to deliberate on ways to improve the
electoral process and to enable them educate the electorates during their
rounds of campaigns.

Some of the assembly
and unit committee members urged governance bodies to collaborate to ensure
effective involvement of all the electorate and support mobilization for the
election.

“It would be
improper for this particular election to experience low turnout like previous
District Elections especially because it coincides with the referendum”,
Mr Chris Nana Omari, an aspirant in the Sakumono Electoral Area told the Ghana
News Agency.

He added that in
order to deepen the decentralization process, it was important for mandated
state institutions to enhance active participation in the governance process,
adding, “We need to reduce apathy towards District Election and the Referendum.

He called on the
electorates to take time of their busy schedules to vote in the forthcoming
election for candidates who were development oriented and have their interest
at heart.

Mr Isaac Kwame
Antwi, Tema Metropolitan Director NCCE said the Commission had heightened its
educational drive to create awareness prior to the elections in spite of some
resource constraints.
