The family of Nashiru Jibril, a first-year student of the Sandema Senior High-Technical School in the Builsa North District of the Upper East Region who was killed during a riot on campus, is demanding justice.
At a news conference at Paga on Saturday, Mamudu Adam, who spoke on behalf of the Adams Apew family, said an autopsy report from the Tamale Teaching Hospital indicated that their son was killed by a life bullet, which they believe was from a police gun.
According to the family, since his death in July, no member of the Police Administration from the district, regional or national level had visited them to explain the circumstances that led to the death of Jibril.
“The Apew Family is demanding a comprehensive report from the police explaining the circumstances that led to the death of Nashiru Jibril and the police involvement in the death of the student on the night of July 16,” they said.
The family claimed that the police at Sandema were aware of the policeman whose gun allegedly killed Jibril but they were being shielded by the Police Administration.
“The family feels the fundamental right of Nashiru Jibril was abused and we are calling on the police and other law enforcement agencies, including the court, to view this case with the utmost seriousness and urgency it deserves to ensure that justice is done for our relative,” they said.
On the night of Tuesday, July 16, 2019 a misunderstanding ensued between the school cadet corps and students resulting in a free-for-all fight after some students found walking around campus after ‘pre-hours’ were punished by personnel of the cadet corps.
As a result, the students destroyed some private and school property and allegedly hurled stones across the compound. Since they could not be controlled by the school authorities, the police were summoned to disperse the angry students.
Unfortunately, in the process of dispersing them, Jibril was hit by a bullet.
It was not clear then whether the bullet had come from the police or someone else, because the police did not comment publicly on the shooting, as well as the death of the student.
