HelpAge Ghana and Rulers of Zion Ministries, an interdenominational religious group has organized a free health-screening program for some aged persons in Accra.
The exercise which took place at Osu saw more than 100 persons over the age of 60 participating.
The participants were offered eye-screening, dental care, ear treatment, legal advice, general medical and legal consultation and free drugs.
The coordinator of the Youth Ministry of the ministries, David Klu who spoke to Citi News said the gesture forms part of the group’s outreach program where it supports the less privileged in society.
“We usually do these programs every year and we take care of orphans as well. As part of our responsibility, we find it prudent to take a day out of the year to take care of the elderly because some are going through a lot. We are taking the opportunity to tell them about Christ fundamentally and what they are going through in terms of their health,” he said.
“We also provide a lawyer in case any of them have legal issues they want to address either their lands and other things such as their will and they do not have the means to consult a legal brain, we have that for free,” he added.
One of the medical officers on duty, Samuel Nkrumah Asamoah, lauded the many initiatives to get senior citizens enrolled on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
“We need to intensify health education for the aged and health workers must also educate the patients about their conditions, and the drugs that are prescribed to them even with the possible side effects so they don’t go to the pharmacy again to get more drugs when there is a side effect,” he said.
