Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Aaron Ocquaye, has said the Ghana Navy needs all the support to be able to provide security at the country’s coasts, particularly the place where oil and gas have been discovered in commercial quantities.
“We look forward to them (Navy) to be favourably well resourced and in a manner that will enable them to read the challenges of criminals and other workers both from inside and without,” he emphasized.
The Speaker made the comment at the Burma Hall in Accra during the launch of the 60th anniversary of the Ghana Navy which was also used to launch a book on the history of the Ghana Navy from the colonial period of its establishment to date.
He said “I’m particularly interested in the merit in view of the fact that the oil that Ghana has discovered is basically sea-based (oceanic discovery) and that means that we have to face a lot of challenges by way of pirates and these can become a serious national economy threat.”
The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Seth Amoama, traced the history of the Ghana Navy and said they had continued to work hard in spite of logistical challenges.
Dr. Emmanuel Kwesi Anning of the faculty of Academic Affairs of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping and Training Centre, who reviewed the book titled: “History of the Ghana Navy – A case for a credible naval force as an instrument for national development” said the book is the first official record of the history of the Ghana Navy.
Also present were Mrs Fulera Limann, a former first lady, members of Parliament, representatives of various agencies, senior military officers – both serving and retired – among others.
