Former President John Dramani Mahama has said that the Akufo-Addo government is failing to guarantee the peace and safety of Ghanaians.
He said the country’s reputation as a peaceful destination in the sub-region is being threatened by the recent spate of violent crimes that have often seen no justice for victims.
Speaking at the final burial rites of the killed National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman for the Daffiama Busie Issa constituency of the Upper West Region, Richard Bayiviala Polibong, John Mahama said the death of the chairman was a reflection of the heightened level of insecurity in the country.
45-year-old Richard Bayiviala Polibon was killed by unknown assailants while returning from a funeral in his constituency.
The Police are yet to apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous crime several weeks after the incident occurred.
John Mahama, who is seeking to lead the country again said robbers have now become emboldened and are terrorizing citizens.
He, therefore, appealed to President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to swiftly deal with the security situation in the country.
“The way he died was tragic. We would have accepted it if he had fallen sick and died naturally but to have his life cut short through such a tragic event is not acceptable. Unfortunately, it is a reflection of the currently insecurity that exists in our country. People are afraid for their lives because armed robbers have become emboldened and they’ve gone on rampage. We urge the Akufo-Addo administration to be up and doing. It is the duty of the government to secure the lives of its citizens,” John Mahama said.
This is not the first time John Mahama is making such a statement in recent times.
While wishing workers in the country a happy May Day celebration he said the insecurity in the country threatened foreign and local investments.
“I am aware of the unprecedented insecurity in our country, which is becoming a major threat to foreign and domestic investment in our economy,” he stated.
He also told Citi News that he rated the country’s security under the Akufo-Addo government as “poor.”
“My assessment will be based on how Ghanaians feel and in my conversations with ordinary Ghanaians, they feel more insecure today than they did in the past…. There seems to be a spate of robberies, there are issues that didn’t exist before like kidnapping of children and so on. And then we feel a real threat of terrorism,” Mr Mahama.
