The Ashanti Regional Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said it might embark on a demonstration on Monday, June 3, over the Electoral Commission’s limited registration exercise.

The EC plans to undertake the exercise ahead of the assembly elections later this year but the NDC has kicked against the EC’s method for the exercise being conducted in all the 250 district offices of the Commission.

Speaking with Citi News, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Kwame Zu said the EC method is an attempt to deliberately disenfranchise communities where the NDC has a stronghold appalling.

“We have expressed many concerns to the Electoral Commission and it appears their posture appears they are unfazed.

“The last resort we had was to demonstrate our displeasure in the form of a peaceful procession God willing on the 3rd of June but we are convening a meeting to take a decision as to whether the demonstration will come on Monday or otherwise but that is literally not dependent on the position of the Police to thwart the process.”

The threat comes days after a Ghanaian man, Umar Ayuba filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking for an injunction to stop the EC from going ahead with the exercise scheduled to begin next week.

Before this injunction, a substantive suit was filed by the same individual challenging the decision by the EC to hold the registration in its district offices and some selected electoral areas.

According to the plaintiff, the directive by the EC is without legal basis and thus unconstitutional.

The EC per is expected to begin the registration on June 7 in readiness for the local elections and referendum scheduled for December.
