Emile Short Commission’s lawyer partisan – Mahama appointee

Alfred Ogbame is the former Communication Director of the Ghana Gas Limited.

Alfred Ogbamey, the immediate past Communication Director of Ghana Gas Limited has accused the Short Commission’s lawyer of partisanship.

According to him Mr. Eric Osei-Mensah’s place of work and Facebook comments give him up as having New Patriotic Party [NPP] leanings.

Posting on his Facebook wall on 25th February, Mr. Ogbamey said, “How would anyone expect the opposition to perceive the fact that not only is the lawyer a staff of the law firm owned by the Chairman of the governing NPP but one whose own Facebook post affirms his support for the ruling party?”

Mr. Ogbamey posted the lawyers work card to back his allegation.

The Short Commission investigating the violence that marred Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election with lawyer Eric Osei-Mensah as its lawyer has been commended for its good work.  Of special mention is the commendations from the NDC, which had earlier stated its apprehension of the Commission’s work.

But speaking to Joy News’ Evans Mensah on the PM Express, a news analysis programme, he said “At the end of the day, whatever [the Commission] is doing, I think will be useful for the country and from the processes, we [NDC] think they are doing a good job…We have realised that they are doing some good work.”

But Mr. Ogbamey who is also the managing editor of the Gye-Nyame Concord newspaper is not impressed.  According to him, the development has the potential to cast doubt on the work of the Commission.

He wrote, “Interesting how in dousing the flames of credibility of the Emile Short Commission, we still managed to get it a publicly-confessed partisan lawyer to act as its chief prosecutor. He may be professional, he may be good, he may be… But what would any reasonable member of society make of his representation of the Commission once this fact is out?” he quizzed.

His assertions, however, did not go unchallenged.

On Facabook, Ato Kwamena Haizel wrote “He works with Blay’s chamber so what exactly? Can you mention three lawyers who have not worked at chambers with partners without political views?”

Davis Opoku Ansah, also on Facebook added his voice writing “Alfred paaaa…. even the EC is partisan. They always have a choice but deliver when it matters. Are you saying that the three Commissioners and the secretary have no choice politically? Stop attacking the young man who has done so well to solicit more information for the commission.”

The Commission, which has taken testimonies from several personalities including the Inspector General of Police, is expected to end its public hearing today.
