The last contest in the preliminary stage of Adom Bible Quiz came to an end on Sunday with the Salvation Grace Chapel, Dominion Cathedral from Abokobi stealing the show in the sword drill round.
The two boys from that church, Kevin Hagan and David Tetteh were too fast on the bible for the rest of the contestants, making the first two rounds look very insignificant.
There were 45 marks at stake in the third round and the two Abokobi lads collected a whopping 30 of those marks by dint of speed and accurate reading.
So fast were the boys that a contestant from a rival church retorted: “ah! these boys are too fast.”
But what actually brought the fun was the repeated mention of the church’s name, which ends with “Abokobi”.
At some point, any time Quiz Master Kwamena Idan mentioned the name of the church, the entire audience joined him in a chorus to say the last word “Abokobi”.
Kwamena Idan could not help but break into laughter by reason of the repetitive chorus “Abokobi”.
The boys may have made the name Abokobi popular through their performance on the show.
They told Adom News they have the trip to Israel on their minds and were determined to win and make that trip.
Their Sunday School Teacher, MacAnthony Daweh said their head pastor, Prophet Patrick Selorm told them that based on the previous contests, he had noticed the sword drill was a game changer hence entreated them to pay attention to that and they did.
Prior to the sword drill, the performance of the two boys was just average, except in round two, when they came across as having memorized the book of study, Ephesians, word-for-word.
Their answers in that round were most apt, no matter how long the required answer was.
It was, however, the sword drill that helped the Abokobi lads to push the almost runaway leaders Arakan Methodist Presbyterian Church, Burma Camp to second place with just one point difference.
The two churches eventually qualified, pushing Church of Pentecost, Denkyira Dominase out of the competition.
Indeed, the Church of Pentecost, Nungua were automatically disqualified because they did not show up at all.
This would be the first time contestants from the Church of Pentecost have failed to qualify from the first round. All other branches of the church qualified from previous contests.
Sunday’s contest ends eight weeks of heated competition in the preliminary stage involving 32 churches.
Sixteen churches have made it to the quarterfinals, which starts February 3, 2019, at Erata Hotel.
The competition promises to get hotter as Quiz Master Kwame Idan assures that the heat is about to be turned up a notch higher.
For one, the number of questions per round is going up from 20 to 24 and it will involve more quotations and some not very obvious facts in the bible.
