IGP, COP David Asante-Apeatu
Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency in the Western Region, George Mireku Duker, says it is wrong for the Minority legislators to ask President Akufo-Addo to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu, from office.
According to him, calling for the IGP’s head will not solve the problem.
The Minority’s call follows the wave of robbery attacks sweeping through the capital, Accra.
Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, has suggested that the IGP is to blame for the seeming confidence of the robbers, and the lawlessness that seems to be gripping the country.
Reports of robberies in Accra and Tema in the Greater Accra Region have generated public debate about the ability of police to protect lives and properties.
On Wednesday a Lebanese man was shot dead shortly after he went to withdraw cash from the bank at the Tema Industrial Area.
The armed robbers trailed the man, popularly known as Alhaji, after he left the bank at about 11:30 am in his Toyota Corolla vehicle, shot and killed him before making away with the money.
Prior to the Tema incidence, armed robbers had stormed Royal Motors, an automobile company in Accra and made away with the company’s sales in a stunning daylight robbery.
Reacting to the development, Mr. Mireku Duker said though the trend is disturbing, “it is wrong to call for the head of the IGP now because that won’t solve the issue of robbery in the country. What the IGP and the police in general need is to support them.
“Citizens who give out information to the police should be protected so they can always give them tip-offs that will lead to these criminals”, he said Thursday on Adom TV’s Morning Show “Badwam”.
Mr. Mireku Duker stressed that manuals and logistics of policing must, as a matter of urgency, be revised through, among others, an enhanced budgetary allocation.
This, he maintained, will help curb criminal activities in the country.
