Adam Bonaa, a security expert has described the Toyota Corolla vehicles which have been purchased by the government for the Ghana Police Service as unfit to fight crime.
According to him, luxury should not be prioritized over the Police Service’s effectiveness in fighting crime.
“At the moment, what the Police need is not luxury… they need what will be able to help them fight crime,” he stated.
He said the Corolla vehicles procured by government were suitable for civilians.
Mr Bona defended his position on the matter by citing the features of a car that would be more appropriate for the security service such as, “…a double suspension, rugged tyres, double layered windshields and highly protected.”
In his expert opinion, these features of a vehicle would make it easy to restrain a criminal who has been caught.
He said that the ones that had currently been purchased could be used for other purposes by police officers that are not security related stating that the police service’s misuse of logistics was common knowledge to the public.
The 100 Toyota Corolla vehicles were purchased by government for $8.8 million for the Ghana Police Service.
The decision, according to the Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid, was taken after the Akufo-Addo-led government reduced the number of VIP vehicles ordered by the erstwhile Mahama administration from 43 to 34.
