According to the drivers some police officers have been arresting them for no reason.
Scores of taxi drivers stationed at the 37 station in the early hours of Tuesday, 20 February 2018, expressed displeasure over what they described as police harassment in the smooth running of their business.
The drivers, some of whom were clad in red armed bands stormed the premises of Class Media Group (Class FM and Accra FM) at Roman Ridge to make their complaints known to the general public.
One of the drivers, Ben told ClassFmonline.com that a police officer at the Nima Police station whose name was given only as Yakubu, has been harassing drivers by arresting them for no reason.
He said: “We want the president to intervene in this matter because that particular police officer called Yakubu at Nima Police station is harassing the drivers. Yakubu says since the drivers were the main forces behind the exit of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from power, they will continue to harass us until we make the current government unpopular ahead of the next elections. Today we are here to make our concerns know to the general public and the president that the officers must be called to order.”
Another driver, Benjamin, also indicated that: “On a daily basis, the police harass us. They arrest us and make us pay an amount of not less than GHS300 before we are released. You ask them the offence and they’re unable to tell you. That is the situation we are confronted with at the moment.”
Meanwhile, DSP Alexander Obeng, the Director in-charge of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Transport Traffic Department (MTTD), said the allegation will be investigated.
“Majority of our officers are delivering on their services.
There is appropriate platform within the Police service to handle this allegation and so we will pick it up and investigate it,” he said.
