The university’s authorities have decided to convert the two male halls into mixed halls
Alumni of the Unity Hall at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have disclosed plans to petition the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to halt a decision by the university management to convert all male halls into mixed halls.
According to the authorities, the decision to convert University Hall also known as Katanga and Unity Hall popularly known as Continental is to boost the female intake of the school and promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics study by offering them a place of accommodation.
This, the alumni are fiercely rejecting, saying that cannot be a reason good enough to collapse the tradition and heritage of the two male halls.
According to Former Unity Hall President, Tetteh Wayo, the main reason for the university’s decision is to curb the protests and clashes between Continentals and Katangees.
Mr Wayo told Class FM’s Joshua Quodjo-Mensah on Monday, February 5, that the alumni will go every length to see that the decision is aborted.
“We want to petition some relevant state institutions which definitely the Ministry of Education is one of them,” Mr Wayo stated.
He continued: “It is very interesting and we are glad that the Minister of Education today, Honorable Mathew Opoku Prempeh is an old boy of Unity Hall so it is going to make it interesting.
“We will petition the minister and send copies to the university authorities as well. We want to take this matter to the next level where other stakeholders will properly look into the matter,”
For him, the solution to accommodation challenges is the establishment of more annexes and not the destruction of the legacies of Unity Hall and Katanga Hall.
