Political analyst and lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo says much as the suspension of Sulemana Alhassan is a swift decision by the President, it is not enough to deter people at the top position who act with impunity.
According to the Political analyst, the culture of impunity in Ghana has reached a level that as a matter of urgency requires drastic intervention including dismissal of appointees who are directly involved in those activities which goes contrary to the laws of Ghana.
His comments come hours after the president suspended the Upper West Regional Minister Sulemana Alhassan for allegedly instructing the release of some NPP thugs who were arrested after they attacked some officers of the Upper West National Disaster Management Organisation.
Following the incident, workers of NADMO in Upper West went on a strike in protest of the actions of Sulemana Alhassan the Upper West Regional Minister. According to the NADMO workers, the Upper West Regional Minister demonstrated no value of their lives given the attack on the NADMO officers led to the aide to the NADMO Regional Director being beaten to a pulp.
Though he has denied the allegations against him that did not stop the President Akufo Addo from cracking the whip.
The suspension of Upper West Regional Minister Sulemana Alhassan pending investigations into attacks at the NADMO Upper West regional office.
However, speaking in an interview with Accra based radio station Joy FM, Professor Ransford Gyampo opined that the President’s decision to suspend Sulemana Alhassan the Upper West Regional Minister should be a wakeup call to the Inspector General of Police.
“In as much as I think what the President has done is good, I think suspension is not enough and this should be a message to the IGP [Inspector General of Police David Asante Appeatu], the next time this thing happens I think people in top positions like the IGP must have their heads roll”
In a related development, the Deputy Chief of Staff Abu Jinarpo has noted that the suspension of Sulemana Alhassan is to send a clear signal to all appointees that nobody is above the law.
