BSFEAT Honored Patrons Black Mrs Akufo-Addo pledged her support to the arts

Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF) yesterday held a symposium at the African Regent Hotel in Accra to discuss how film can be used as a tool to change the narrative for women.

The event which was massively attended by top industry players in the filmmaking and movie industry also saw the first lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo appointed as a patron for the festival.

Accepting the invitation, Mrs Akufo-Addo pledged her support to the arts and called for better narratives that will sell the country’s image and culture in a positive light.

“As one passionate about women and children I am happy that we can come together to examine the role of women and change the narrative to reflect the enormous contribution of women to society,” she noted.

“Film as a tool for changing the global narrative of women will definitely foster an environment that is supportive of women. I am not an expert on films but as a social observer, I have followed the success stories of women over the century who have done incredible things but whose stories have not been told. If this is done it will be an example for the younger generation and break the myth that women are less than men,” the First Lady added.

Founder of BSIFF, Juliet Asante, expressed her gratitude to the first lady and the managing director of Cal Bank, Frank Adu for developing the interest in the arts and accepting to play a part in its development.

“Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo’s decision to become a special friend of the art is driven by her understanding and appreciation of the urgent strides the industry needs to affect minds, give hope to young people and re-position Ghana as an attractive business and tourist destination.

Our other patron Mr Adu is a real diamond. A real gem! When he was approached to become a patron he didn’t hesitate to accept the offer and pledge this support,” Juliet stated.

The Black Star International Film Festival is a film forum, advocacy platform and a bridge between the local and international film industry with a focus on the business of film.

The event which was also attended by the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Catherine Afeku and other actors in the movie industry also witnessed a poetry performance by Citi FM’s Apiorkor Ashong-Abbey.
