The fifth MUSIGA Presidential Grand Ball held on December 29th 2017 saw impressive performances and honours given to those who deserve honour.

President and Executive Chairman of the Doscar Group Holdings, Oscar Yao Doe, CEO of CharterHouse, Mrs Theresa Ayoade, and telecoms giant, MTN received the special Music Industry Pillar Award (MIPA).

In a letter to Mr Yao Doe, the Musicians’ Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) said he had been deemed deserving of the award because “Your contributions to the evolution of music, fashion, event red carpet and support for Musiga over the past years makes you a pillar in the industry and we feel you are much deserved of this honour.”

Celebrated Ghanaians who have won the MIPA in the past former Finance Minister and Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Kwabena Duffour, businessman and media mogul, Osei Kwame Despite, former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, industrialist, Apostle Kwadwo Safo and PR expert, Edward Boateng.

Apart from the MIPA, five music legends – Nana Ampadu, Jewel Aka, Obuoba J. A. Adofo, A.B Crentsil and famous Fante vocal legend CK Mann – received the Lifetime Achievement Honours.

They each received a plaque and cash of GHS10,000.

The smiles on their faces were still glistening when businessman, philanthropist and politician, Assin North Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Agyapong pledged a monthly stipend of GHS5000 to each of them for the rest of their lives.

His donation received a thunderous applause from the guests who included President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former First lady Nana Konadu, Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare, Information Minister, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid and many other government officials.

The quintessential Nana Ampadu, performing with his son at the event, praised the maverick politician for his generosity in a well-composed song.

In his address, president Akufo-Addo paid glowing tribute the awardees, saying they and those before them had put Ghana on the world map through their music.

He said the current generation of musicians, mentioning the names of – Sarkodie, Becca, Samini, Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy, Kuami Eugene, amongst others – were playing their part in giving Ghana global recognition through the art of music.

He said music had the potential to unleash the creative genius of the citizenry and praised MUSIGA for its forward-looking initiatives and projects.

The president pledged his government’s unflinching support to foster the growth of the music industry in Ghana.

The acting CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Hassan Tampuli, who was the chairman of the MUSIGA Grand Ball 2017 lauded his predecessors for their foresight and sacrifices.

He praised the leadership of MUSIGA for the strides being made to develop the music industry.

The impressive event also saw impressive performances beginning with VGMA Artist of the Year, Joe Mettle.

Becca, Music duo Wutah performed various paying tribute to highlife great Paapa Yankson and Awurama Badu.

Nana Ampadu, AB Crentsil, Daddy Lumba, also performed but it was Ivorian, Freddy Meiway who stole the show with energetic performances.

He lit the entire Banquet Hall, venue for the Ball, with hit after hit, crowning it all with his all-time hit song, Zoblazo. Every inch of the dance floor was covered with busy shuffling feet. Very few people remained in their seats.

Comedian DKB, setting everyone laughing their head off including Nana Konadu who once said the comedian is not funny.

On this occasion, she laughed so hard and clapped so furiously she almost gave him a one-woman standing ovation.

A number of items – Paapa Yankson’s trumpet and flute and a painting of him, Awurama Badu’s acoustic guitar, and Agya Koo Nimo’s pentatonic xylophone – were auctioned to raise funds for the Ageing Musicians’ Welfare Fund.
