There were no major surprise calls and omissions as Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) officially announced the final 14-man squad that will represent the nation in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Africa Division I Twenty20 Championship scheduled to run from July 8-16 in Kampala.
As the Chief Executive Officer Justine Ligyalingi read out the chosen T20 exponents, it was easy to notice that UCA had stuck with their new faith of introducing youngsters in the national fold without wholly altering the team chemistry.
Although there was no room for the Asian-born quartet of Ali Raza (back in India), Ankit Patel, Jigar Patel and Kamal Shehzad, two junior players (captain Brian Masaba & Abdullah Lubega) joined mainstay Henry Ssenyondo into the side making the number of U-19 internationals into the new-look team three.
The hard-work of former Africa Cricket Club (ACC) captain Ivan Thawithemwira, who moved to Wanderers after his side was relegated last season to give himself a fighting national call chance, was also rewarded.
“I am grateful for this second chance. Prayers work miracles and I thank all those that have been praying for me. I will keep the faith,” exclaimed the 29-year-old after the squad-naming press conference held at Oasis Restaurant in Lugogo. Another Wanderers player Arthur Ziraba was recalled.
