7 June 2011 RECORDS were shattered again at the recent annual Hartebeestloop stud auction with the average selling price for bulls reaching N$78 340. Eight bulls were sold for more than N$100 000, while the most expensive bull fetched a price of N$480 000. Last year's auction set a new African record for the average selling price of bulls at N$70 881.

Maktau Chief Chrispus Mnyika has said that only an electric fence will solve human and wildlife conflict in the location which neighbours Tsavo National Park.

He urged the residents to embrace a fencing project from Maktau to Ndi which will prevent elephants from the park from straying into their farms.

Mnyika said the Kenya Wildlife Services had made major efforts to flush out the elephants but they always came back after a short time. “The KWS has always done all it can to drive back the jumbos away but they always come back to destroy our crops,” said the chief.
