A 25-year-old woman was arrested yesterday after she threw her new born baby girl into a pit latrine in Kiaga village in Kirinyaga Central district.

According to area OCPD Patrick Oduma, Nancy Wangithi procured an abortion and threw her baby into the latrine after her husband told her that he didn’t want another child.

Oduma said that according to Michael Mburia who reported the matter, the baby was rescued by members of the public who were passing by the latrine and heard faint cries. They demolished the toilet and managed to save the baby which was wrapped in a polythene bag. Oduma ordered the suspect to be taken to hospital for treatment so that she can stand trial.

The baby was taken to Baricho police station from where she was rushed to Kerugoya District hospital where she is responding to treatment. The husband is yet to be questioned on the matter.
