Hospital da Luz medical director Jose Roquette has announced that Portugal legend Eusebio will be able to leave intensive care on Saturday.

The 69-year-old was admitted on Wednesday with an acute respiratory infection and it was later confirmed that he was suffering from bilateral pneumonia, which affects both lungs.

“Eusebio will soon be able to leave the intensive care move to intermediate care,” Roquette told reporters. “He spent the night very well and is very calm.

“His condition has improved, he has been eating well and he rested well. We are thinking about letting him leave the intensive care tomorrow [Saturday], depending on his progress, so that he can spend Christmas in a hospital room.”

The former Benfica star was previously admitted at Hospital da Luz in 2007, where he underwent heart operation to prevent a potential stroke.
