Drunken drivers who are arrested on Friday will go to court only on Wednesday morning – meaning they will spend the entire Christmas weekend, including the public holidays, behind bars.
That is the warning from Metro Police head, Senior Superintendent Eugene Msomi, on Thursday.
He said those drivers who took chances would be caught and arrested.
“We are going to be opposing bail as much as possible for all those who are caught driving under the influence.”
Msomi said the bail amount for the offence would not be less than R500 for each offender.
Those who go overboard with fireworks have also been warned.
Msomi said the city bylaws restricted the use of fireworks to between 15 minutes before midnight and 15 minutes afterwards, but they usually gave people an hour before fines were issued to those who still continued using fireworks beyond that.
“The fine for the breach of that law is R500 and if someone repeats the offence they will be arrested,” he said.
Msomi hoped people would behave themselves during the festive season as he warned that police would be out on duty in their numbers. – Daily News
