Police arrested an alleged rapist and his accomplice two days after he allegedly raped a young woman on the South Coast.
Provincial police spokes-man Captain Thulani Zwane said the 18-year-old victim had been with her boyfriend on December 19 at about 3.30am when two men had forcefully entered the room where the two had been lodging for the night, in the Nzimakwe area on the South Coast.
“The two suspects had threatened the boyfriend, who then fled, leaving his girlfriend behind,” he said. “They took the boyfriend’s sandals and cellphone before they forced the girl into nearby bushes, where one suspect raped her.”
Zwane said Port Edward detectives immediately began a search for the suspects.
“On December 2, at about 3am, a team of detectives were led to the Madabalaza location near the Msinsini bus stop in the Nzimakwe area, where the alleged rapist was hiding,” he said.
Zwane said the suspect had fled upon seeing police and ran into a banana plantation.
Stab
“The police gave chase and the suspect tried to stab the officer in pursuit with a knife and was shot in the stomach. He was arrested and taken to hospital in a stable condition under police guard,” he said.
Zwane said a follow-up operation later during the day had led to the arrest of a second suspect.
“The two suspects will be charged with robbery and rape. They will appear in Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court soon,” he said. – Daily News Reporter
