Black Stars players
The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has congratulated the playing body, management team of the Black Stars for their emphatic victory over Sudan in the last match of the qualifiers of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, in Omduman, Sudan over the weekend.
The victory sealed Ghana’s qualification to the 28th Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
A statement from the secretariat of the Association said the 2-0 victory over the Sudanese demonstrates the teams’ determination, tough mental attitude and the zeal to qualify on their own.
The statement said the qualification also spared Ghanaians the stress of relying on arithmetic to qualify for the continental showpiece.
“SWAG is proud of your achievement and your qualification was confirmation of your status on the continent as one of the best football nations on the continent.
“SWAG is convinced that the Black Stars is a better position to make a better impact at the Nations Cup next year”.
It urged the players not to be complacent by the absence of some power houses in the competition, but rather remain focused in their efforts to win the cup for Ghana after 29 years.
The statement also cautioned the public not to rejoice over the absence of nations like Nigeria, Cameroon, Egypt and South Africa from the competition, since football has come of age on the continent and other countries pose equal threats to the chances of the Black Stars.
It said countries like Mali, Guinea, Senegal could pose stiff opposition to the aspirations of Ghana hence the need to remain focused and do away with all forms of complacency.
