The stringent conditions set by the Independent Elections Board for the eligibility of candidates to participate in next month’s football polls have left many scratching their heads. They have to acquire a compliance certificate which is proving a little difficult for some.

It emerged that of the about 39 candidates that were cleared to run for the national poll only nine have so far been given the green light to participate in the elections. “I have presented my tax returns so I am hoping to be cleared and get the certificate with IEB,” said former international Sammy Sholei who is gunning for the post of vice chairman on the same ticket as national chairman contender Hussein Mohammed, one of the candidates already cleared. “It is a huge headache for most of the candidates” Sholei added.

Meanwhile Gor Mahia will have to wait for a while to know if they will remain in the FKL Cup after they lost 11-10 on post match penalties to Congo United after their match ended goalless in regulation time at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium yesterday. The 2009 champions Gor will now have to wait and see if they will be among the five best losers who can go through to the next round. Mombasa burst into a frenzy after the result.

Both teams were reduced to a man down after match referee Abdalla Rufai first sent off Congo’s Humphrey Oyando in the second half. Tens minutes later Gor player Paul Ochomo followed him out and things threatened to get out of control when he disallowed Congo’s goal scored by Bezenga Mohamed for off side.

The decision by the referee did not go down well with the home team fans forcing police to move in to calm things down. K’ogalo coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno hurried up to make a substitution bringing in Dan Makori, Moses Odhiambo and Mangili Selenga but the move failed to turn the match round as they played to a stalemate
