Blackburn Rovers defender Christopher Samba has stated his desire to play Champions League football, amid reports that Arsenal are looking to tie up a deal for the Congo international.

Arsene Wenger is keen to add a centre-back to his squad this summer and is reportedly interested in the Blackburn star, as well as Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Everton’s Phil Jagielka.

Samba told reporters: “Of course I’d like to play in the Champions League – which player doesn’t dream of that?

“It would be a lie if I told you, ‘Everything is good and I don’t want to play in the Champions League.’ That would be a big lie. Every player wants to do that.

“I don’t know what will happen, but at the minute I’m at Blackburn. We’ll see what happens. If you get a player who has no ambition to play higher, he made a mistake and chose the wrong sport. He should do something else.

“When you’re a footballer or play any high-profile sport, you should be ambitious. It’s difficult at the moment, but I’m just waiting to see what happens and concentrating on my preparation.”

But Samba insists he is still looking forward to a new season with Blackburn.

He continued: “I don’t really know what they’re planning to do, but if we can sign one or two high-quality players that would be good.

“The manager is also ambitious for himself and his squad, and I hope it’s possible for Blackburn to get into Europe.”

Samba was speaking after Blackburn’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Barclays Asia Trophy, but he remained positive despite the loss.

“The conditions were very difficult, but it’s good to lose a few pounds in pre-season,” Samba explained. “We wanted to treat it like a Premier League game as it’s important to develop good habits.

“There was a lot of engagement and aggression from both teams. We’re getting better slowly and hopefully we can start the season well.”
