Kumasi — An armed robber in his early thirties was on Tuesday sentenced to 50 years imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court for robbing a number of people at gunpoint.
The convict, Boakye Konadu, alias Andythat on July 7, 2011, three young men, now at large, entered a cyber café at Bomso, a suburb of Kumasi, and pretended to have come to browse the Internet.
Later, the convict also entered armed with a locally manufactured pistol, and ordered the victims, numbering about four, to lie on the floor. The prosecuting officer said it became evident that the three persons who entered earlier were part of the gang, when they were also found to be armed, after the convict had locked the main entrance of the café.
Having ordered their victims to lie on the floor at gunpoint, they succeed in robbing the victims one after the other, of their computers, mobile phones, and various sums of money.
The prosecutor mentioned that the items the robbers took from the victims included a computer server, valued at GH¢2,000, which belonged to Kevin Numekpor, as well as an HP laptop valued at GH¢1,800, one LG mobile phone valued at GH¢30, and a sum of GH¢80 belonging to Castro Afrifa Acheampong.
Julius Odoi was robbed of his Toshiba laptop, costing GH¢530, and a bag valued at GH¢20, while the fourth victim, Sabina Amma Sossuo-Gloh, lost her Vodafone mobile phone, plus a cash of GH¢170.
Prosecutor Osei Hwere stated further that while the other suspects were robbing the other victims, Boakye Konadu pounced on Sabina in an attempt to rape her, but for her resistance.
In an attempt to overpower her, Boakye Konadu hit her in the abdomen with a chair, but to no avail. When all else failed, the suspects bolted away with their booty.
According to Osei Hwere, some days after, the convict was seen by one of the victims, who reported him to the Oforikrom Police, upon which he was arrested.
A search on him revealed two locally manufactured pistols and three live cartridges, as a result of which he was charged with the offences, and consequently prosecuted.
