It is interesting now-a-days to see students competing amongst each other for efficiency in their academic pursuit, especially when Liberia’s education system is being attacked by many in some quarters as poor and in hodgepodge.

Be what it may, the country’s education system seems to take have stepped on the verge of a constructive aspect and direction aimed at delivering quality education to the Liberian children that would prepare them for their roles in the national development package of their motherland.

It was, therefore, not strange when Educating Minister, Othello Gongar recently disclosed  in a speech he delivered at the graduation program of  Cestos High School, strategies his Ministry is putting  together to advance Liberia’s education system to be on par with those of other countries and Liberian students to cope with their counterparts any where in the world.

If Minister Gongar has earlier introduced even a part of the strategies, then Liberia’s education system is already on the go and success is not quite far away as evidenced by the passing grades students are now making in the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), through competitive endeavor by all schools in the country.

One such school is the St. Matthew United Methodist High school in Logan Town Bushrod Island where eighty-five percent of senior students who went for the WAEC examinations came out with flying colors.

Addressing students, parents and guardians at the graduation ceremony recently, the principal of the school, Mr. Jerry F. Sumo, said the certificates and the diplomas they the students have achieved through merit system is a significant evidence that Liberian students are prepared to forge ahead to acquire sound education that will be their bludgeon for future development.

He however, cautioned the students to strive for higher education combined with technical or vocational education so that they will be adequately prepared for participation in the reconstruction of Liberia after nearly two decades of unwonted civil strife.

Mr. Sumo lauded the staff of the school from teachers to maintenance personnel for their relentless performance of duties which, he noted, led to the impressive performance of the students in the academic 2011 WAEC examinations and urged them to continue with their good work in the next academic years to come.

He said the commitment of the staff which reaped good results, not only for the school but also for the Logan Town Community, the church and Liberia as a whole is commendable.

The soft-spoken Sumo then admonished parents to prioritize the education of their children which he described as bedrock of successful youth of a nation like Liberia where basic development is in dire need at this crucial time in her history.
